Alberta natives who moved to the Okanagan in 1990, Alex and Louise Lubchynski began growing grapes organically in the mid-1990s. They now have three vineyards nestled among residences in the Lakeview Heights district near Westbank. They began planning their own winery when their daughter, Alana, decided to become a winemaker.
She has taken the wine courses offered by the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus and worked with several Okanagan wineries.
In the off-season, she has gone to the southern hemisphere, doing the 2008 crush at Poole’s Rock winery in Australia’s Hunter Valley, the 2009 crush in New Zealand and the 2010 crush at Xanadu Winery in Australia’s Margaret River. The estate-grown grapes available to her include gewürztraminer, pinot noir, pinot gris, pinot blanc and gamay.
Beaumont’s tasting room is also notable for the impromptu concerts by Alex, a fine guitar player and singer with a 1970s repertoire.
