After eight years in a Richmond strip mall, Blossom Winery moved in 2009 to share quarters with a sister winery, Lulu Island Winery. Proprietors John Chang and Allison Lu came to Canada in 1999 from Taiwan. He was an electrical equipment dealer there but, inspired by the memory of his grandmother’s fruit wines, began making raspberry and blueberry wines from berries grown on Richmond’s many farms.
Subsequently, Blossom branched into both grape wines and icewines.
Blossom makes about 30,000 litres a year and contracts grapes at five Okanagan and Similkameen vineyards. Much of the wine is exported to China and Taiwan. In 2006, the winery was recognized as one of the 24 fastest-growing exporters in the province. With the 22,000-square-foot Lulu Island winery looking after consumer sales in the domestic market, Blossom has now become an export label.
