Ian and Jane Mavety launched Blue Mountain winery in 1991 with dry, Burgundy-style table wines when most other Okanagan wineries still focused on Germanic whites. The winery won cult status as a leading pinot noir producer, along with its elegant whites and sparkling wines.
The vineyard practices are strictly governed by principles of sustainable agriculture. Since New Zealand-trained son, Matt, joined in the business, Blue Mountain has been assessing techniques of biodynamic viticulture. In 2007, Blue Mountain extended its vineyard, with vines in the new section planted at twice the density typical in the Okanagan.
The object is to limit the vigour of the vines by forcing them to compete – a method copied from Burgundy. In the 2010 vintage, the winery expects to produce its first sauvignon blanc from a 2007 planting on the estate.
