1385 Frost Rd.
Lindell Beach, BC
This was British Columbia’s first fruit winery when the industry, after years of dormancy, revived in the late 1990s. It was purchased in 2004 by Constantin and Vasilica Nemantu, Romanian immigrants who moved from Montreal because they wanted to raise their five children on a farm.
It was incidental that the farm, which grows berries and nuts, happened to have a winery; but they decided to keep it open. This is a couple with unusual determination. They arrived in Canada as refugees, smuggling themselves from Europe in a cargo container on a ship to Montreal. There, they became landlords and owned seven houses by the time they moved west.
