Geologist Dale Wright, who has run his own oil well-drilling firm in Regina since 1984, and his wife, Jeri Estin, an educator, were looking for wine-country retirement property when they discovered in 2007 that the original Herder Winery facility was for sale. (Herder had relocated to a larger winery near Keremeos.)
The Herder property appealed to them, not just because there is a comfortable three-year-old house, but because they could create new business from the existing winery and vineyard (gewürztraminer, pinot noir), along with purchased grapes. Lawrence Herder made the debut vintage before handing over the cellar to winemaker Spencer Kelly, who had worked with Herder for a crush.
