Born in Canada to parents who emigrated from Germany, brothers Walter and Gordon Gehringer prepared for their winery by studying in German wine schools. Walter was the first Canadian to graduate from Geisenheim University, while Gordon graduated from Weinsberg, Germany’s top wine school.
(Walter’s son, Brendon, is currently in his second year of wine studies at the University of Adelaide in Australia.) During the first decade of this winery, which opened in 1986, it specialized in Germanic whites, notably riesling, and in icewine. In its second decade, Gehringer Brothers bought more vineyard, planted Bordeaux and Burgundy varieties, and added a reserve label, the Optimum Series.
