Orofino Vineyards

2152 Barcello Road
Cawston, BC

Former Saskatchewan teacher John Weber and his wife, Virginia, a nurse, credit a 1991 wine tour in France for sparking their move a decade later to an established vineyard in the Similkameen Valley.

Planted in 1989, the vineyard provides an enviable selection of varieties, including merlot, pinot noir, cabernet franc, pinot blanc, malbec and riesling. Neighbouring growers provide, among other varieties, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot, from which the Webers are releasing reserve tier varietal wines in 2010.

Orofino has contracted the all-merlot Oak Knoll vineyard in Kaleden to support its Red Bridge label. The winery, which opened in 2005, is a Canadian first: it is built with straw bales. Attractively clad in pink-hued stucco, the Orofino winery provides exceptional energy efficiency and a restfully cool tasting room during the valley’s hot summers.
