Ontario-born Steve and Kirsty Dale came to wine while running a Swiss-based consultancy in organic horticulture. That enabled them to tour the wineries in surrounding countries and to enjoy a wine-tasting Spanish sabbatical.
They moved to the Okanagan in 2003, where Steve enrolled in a viticulture course. He did his practicum at a one-hectare vineyard near Westbank that he subsequently bought (and expanded) for this winery, which opened in 2006. In 2007, Rollingdale achieved organic certification for the winery. The winery also specializes in icewines; these include a wine called Portage, a dark red icewine from marĂ©chal foch, a variety rarely used for icewine. The winery’s 2006 Pinot Gris Sweet Tooth Series icewine was given a perfect score by a reviewer at the Vinoble 2008 dessert wine festival in Spain.
