Sonoran Estate Winery

5716 Gartrell Road
Summerland, BC

Immigrants from Holland in 1982, the Smits family were Fraser Valley flower growers until moving in 2000 to a Summerland orchard set on a dramatic slope overlooking Lake Okanagan. After opening a highway-side bed and breakfast, the Smits replaced the fruit trees with vines, opening a winery with the first fruit from the vineyard.

The varieties grown include merlot, pinot noir, chardonnay, gew├╝rztraminer, riesling, ehrenfelser and pinot blanc. In 2007, the family moved from the original Sonoran winery, which had difficult highway access, to a high-traffic site on the wine route in Summerland. Beginning with the 2005 vintage, Sonoran now releases its premium wines under the 13 Moons label. Inspired by the lunar cycles, the label also signals a commitment to biodynamic practices.

  1. Do you have family who has moved recently to Furry Creek BC? On April 30, I had an open house for my birthday and invited all the neighbors and many came. Which was awesome. However, I did loose track of who came and their names. I was presented with a nice bottle of wine in a wooden box by a delightful looking child. She wanted to even open the bottle for me. But all people standing there said: “Oh no!”…. I said: “I will safe it for a special occasion”. My son Dave and wife Jeannette had just their 25 years anniversary and I gave the bottle to them this Saturday. But I so would like to share the story with the neighbor who brought it. He said that his wife was dealing in wine. I know these silly details, but do not remember the name or in which house they moved into. Can you help me in the right direction?
